Creating a Wales without violence through bystander intervention

What is Lead the Change Wales?
Maybe you’ve seen something you weren’t okay with – but didn’t have the confidence or skills to intervene?
Kindling Interventions is supporting the Welsh Government to develop a national pilot of free bystander training. The training will empower people to speak up, offer help, and decrease the likelihood of violence occurring.
Lead the Change is part of Welsh Government strategy to make Wales the safest country in Europe to be a woman and to de-normalise sexual harassment and violence in all parts of society.
Kindling aims to deliver Lead the Change Wales training to 1200 people during the pilot. It is available to organisations, community groups, sports teams, education settings and workplaces in Wales from 2024-2026.

Why is Lead the Change Wales necessary?
Violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence (VAWDASV) is a fundamental violation of human rights and has far-reaching consequences for families, and our society.
Bystander intervention training
Bystander intervention training is based on the idea that by intervening in small ways we can all play a part in preventing more severe harms like sexual assault.
When we see or hear sexual harassment, and do nothing, we empower the harasser. The same goes for sexism, misogyny, ‘banter’ and unwanted comments that degrade women and girls. When we let these things pass, we create a culture in which others feel able to take it further.

More information on the Lead the Change Wales partnership
Lead the Change is a partnership project funded by Welsh Government, project managed by PLAN International, and delivered by Kindling Interventions in partnership with Beyond Equality. Read about each of the project partners below.
Kindling Interventions has been designing and delivering bystander training since 2014. We challenge organisations to go beyond training and embed a whole–organisation holistic approach to their work. Kindling designs and delivers bespoke bystander training to enable effective intervention against microaggressions and other harmful behaviours. Our work is evidence-led, rigorously evaluated and sector-leading.
The Welsh Government is committed to ending violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence (VAWDASV); it is a fundamental violation of human rights and has far-reaching consequences for families, and our society. Welsh Government has extended the scope of their overall strategy to include street and workplace harassment. Their aim is to work with survivors and create a space for people to learn what masculinity means in a world without VAWDASW. The Welsh Government want to make Wales the safest country in Europe to be a woman and to de-normalise sexual harassment and violence in all parts of society.
Beyond Equality equips boys and men with new perspectives, kickstarting the process of community change, personal development and gender equality.
The Welsh Government's aim for women's safety
I strongly encourage all organisations in Wales to make full use of this opportunity. Together, we can create a safer, more supportive environment for everyone in Wales.
